It may be the holy grail of questions, especially for mothers: How do we wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and energized?

I know for most moms, waking up early in the morning is just a necessary fact of life, and we bear this burden with a half-hearted smile and a large cup of coffee. Even on our days off, we are often pulled out of bed by screaming children, or the laundry list of ‘to-dos’ that we have been putting off.

Waking up doesn’t have to be a form of mild torture however, as there are a few ways we can make the process a bit easier.

-Keep a full glass of water at your bedside, and drink it as soon as you wake up. This will jump-start your metabolism and trick your brain into realizing it is time to get up.

-Wake up at exactly the same time every day, and don’t hit the snooze button. Eventually, your body will get on a rhythm, and wake up at that time automatically. If you have a rare opportunity to sleep in, put a pillow over your head and go back to sleep.

-Get out of bed immediately after you drink the water. If you lay in bed checking emails, chances are you will convince yourself to settle back in, and make it even harder on yourself in the long-run.

-Eat breakfast as soon as you can. Again, jumpstarting your metabolism in the morning is the best way to make sure it runs properly all day, and can even affect your sleeping patterns the next night.

-Calm yourself before bed. One surefire way to wake up feeling refreshed is to make sure you are clear-minded before you hop into bed. You can do this with meditation, reading, or just some time spent being mindful of the present. Either way, shut off all electronics 45 minutes before bed-time if you want to wake up with a clear mind.
